The Walliser folk colonised regions in Oberwallis over 1000 years ago. This experience as alpine settlers helped them with the foundation of new colonies in scarcely used mountain areas. Many of the following generations also emigrated to the Vorarlberg. The large Walserweg is not as it was when it was an emigrating route but more a connection between lots of different sites of the Walser culture. This cultural hiking path can be separated into smaller stages and is therefore easier to accomplish in sections.
